Symptoms of Ear Wax Build Up: How to Recognize When to Seek Help
Aderyn Hearing’s Associate Audiologist, Nate, discusses common symptoms of ear wax build up and how you can find relief.
Why does the body produce ear wax?
“Ear wax, or cerumen, is a naturally occurring substance produced in the external acoustic meatus (outer ear). It is composed of sebaceous oils, sweat, skin cells, etc.”
“It is produced by the body for numerous reasons. As earwax traps dust, debris, foreign bodies, bacteria, etc., it serves as barrier preventing these things from reaching deep into the ear canal. Earwax also contains antimicrobial properties, which can prevent the growth of bacterial and fungal infections. Earwax can also keep the ear canal moisturised, preventing itchiness, discomfort, etc. The amount of ‘earwax’ produced can differ from person to person, due to genetics and/or environmental factors. For example, someone who works in dusty or outdoor environments may find that they build up with more earwax than someone who does not work in these environments.”
Indicators of excessive wax build up:
Aural fullness
Earache
Tinnitus
Temporary hearing loss
Dizziness or vertigo
Aural itchiness
Discharge from the ear(s)
What happens if these symptoms are ignored?
“If the above indicators are ignored, a lot of these symptoms will just persist.”
“For example, if the sufferer is experiencing earache, the earache could continue until the wax is removed. In worse case scenarios, which are not uncommon, impacted wax can become a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to infection. A common example of this is when someone with impacted wax goes swimming, and gets water stuck in the ear canal due to the impacted wax. The stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to infections, which could have been avoided if the water was not stuck in the ear canal in the first place.”
