How to know when it’s time for a hearing test.

Hearing loss is something that will eventually affect everybody to some extent. The inner ear has hair cells which convert sound waves into electrical signals, which are sent to the brain to be interpreted as sound. Over time these cells deteriorate, which affects this process. They do not regenerate themselves, meaning, once they're gone, they're gone!

Common symptoms of hearing loss:

  • Asking people to repeat themselves often

  • Turning the TV up higher than usual

  • Struggling to hear telephone calls

  • Struggling to hear with background noise (restaurants, pubs etc.)

  • Trouble locating where sounds are coming from

Hearing loss can be caused by many different things. Whether it be gradual loss due to work environments, or due to one intense sound, like an explosion. Any sound above ~87dB can cause hearing damage, depending on how long you listen to sounds at that level or above for. The link between hearing loss and dementia is something that is being researched heavily at the moment. It is always best to be on the safe side.
